Haints
Referred to in: Chapter 1-The Ghostlight Express
Tethered apparitions that appear lankey, ethereal, and shimmer a ghastly blue-green and floats off the surface of the train car floors. Their clothes are worn and tattered, billowing as if caught in a perpetual breeze. Some haints repeat action and phrases from their past lives, trapped in a loop of obsessive memories, while others might repeatedly relive moments of joy, sorrow, or fear.
Wayward Haints (pg 536) are spirits trapped between the worlds of the living and the dead. They are not free souls, usually due to some lingering guilt or an unresolved connection to the mortal world. Not all haints are inherently wicked, but their lack of freedom to cross over into their next form of existence takes a toll on their psyche and disposition. They are tethered to the train forever until their burden is lifted or they deteriorate into soul coal and become fuel for the train.
Bound Spirits are haints that remain bound to the train and become its minions if they have not been freed prior to its transformation into the corrupted Ghostlight Express
